Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus)

Found in the coastal lowlands, from southeast North Carolina to eastern Louisiana, and throughout Florida (including the Keys), diamondbacks are large heavy-bodied snakes with fangs that can grow to be one inch long. Rattlesnakes are responsible for 98% of all snakebites in America. Their venom is a powerful hemotoxin causing pain, swelling, and tissue damage. Without treatment, mortality rates are around 14%. Even if the victim survives, they will need a significant time to recover from the damage caused by the venom.
