The Bestiary: Predators

Bonus Feats, Skills, and Special Abilities

Spit Venom (New Special Ability)

An animal with this Special Attack can spray venom at an enemy. A successful strike causes the target to be Blinded. The target will also be Stunned for one round from the shock and pain. A Stunned character drops everything held, can’t take actions, takes a -2 penalty to AC, and loses his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). A blinded character suffers a 50% miss chance in combat, loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, moves at half-speed, and suffers a -4 penalty on Search checks and on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks (see Player's Handbook, v3.5, Glossary for more details).

They will remain Blinded until they take 1 minute (10 rounds) to rinse out their eyes with water, assuming that water is available. If the character is unable to rinse out his or her eyes within 1 hour, they must make a Fortitude roll DC5. The character must continue making Fortitude rolls DC5 every additional 1 hour until they rinse their eyes. Each failed roll means that the character permanently losses a percentage of their vision, suffering a -1 penalty to any action requiring sight, and providing an opponent in combat with an additional 10% miss chance. After 5 failed checks, the character is considered completely and permanently Blinded. See Player's Handbook v3.5, Glossary for details on how this affects the character.

The target must be facing the snake for this attack to work. Glasses and goggles provide complete protection from this attack, as does turning the eyes away from the snake or covering the eyes. A target that has its eyes closed at the moment of the attack will need to wipe its eyes with a cloth before it can open its eyes, to avoid Blindness.
